Gavin and Stacey is set to return to viewers’ screens this year with the long-awaited conclusion to the biggest proposal cliffhanger finally revealed.
The BBC series followed the lives of Gavin Shipman (played by Matthew Horne) and Stacey West (Joanna Page) after going on a double date with their best friends Smithy (James Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones).
After the series came to a close in 2010, fans were gifted with a Christmas special back in 2019 where Nessa proposed to Smithy – despite their adamant “dislike” for one another.
With the episode ending on a cliffhanger, viewers will finally get an answer as to whether the pair finally faced their true feelings and got hitched, or parted ways for good.
According to Deadline, writers James Corden and Ruth Jones will film a new episode over the summer, with it being released just in time for a Christmas miracle.
The series is currently in its development and pre-production stage, with cameras set to roll in a few months’ time.

The 2019 Christmas special was the most-watched show in a decade after it brought in a staggering 18 million viewers.
It has also been claimed to Deadline that the majority of the main cast will likely return for the special, making it another family affair episode.
Viewers are hopeful to see how Gavin and Stacey have moved on since the last time we saw them, including updates for Bryn West (Rob Brydon), Pamela Shipman (Alison Steadman), Michael Shipman (Larry Lamb) and Gwen West (Melanie Walters).
The BBC has declined to comment on the show’s return.
Fans of the show were left delighted with the announcement and flocked to their social media accounts to express their excitement.

“Another Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special?!” one X user exclaimed as another echoed: “Xmas Day 2024 BBC One schedule about to be GOATed with Doctor Who and Gavin & Stacey both on.”
“GAVIN & STACEY IS BACK?!?! OMG I SUDDENLY FEEL SO MUCH BETTER!!!” a third fan expressed before a fourth penned: “I’m so excited for this! Gavin & Stacey is one of my favorite shows ever.
“It’s hilarious, heartwarming, and relatable. I can’t wait to see what the characters are up to after all these years. I hope they bring back Nessa and Smithy’s iconic catchphrases.” (sic)
Last year, Page remained tight-lipped about the future of the show and insisted that she didn’t know anything or have any updates.

She explained: “I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t get the call, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I did. If there is a comeback, I’ll find out at the same time as the public because I don’t get told anything.”
Whilst there is no plot for the special as of yet, Page shared her theories for what could arise on the island of Barry and how all their lives have changed.
“Gavin and Stacey’s kids would be teenagers now, so that would be quite funny to see,” she remarked.
The BBC has declined to comment on Deadline’s report.
