OpenAI will make its frontier artificial intelligence models and its Codex coding agent available through Google Cloud in the coming weeks, deepening ties between two rivals and underlining how the major cloud providers are becoming the key distributors of top AI systems.
The partnership, announced on Wednesday, will bring OpenAI’s latest models, including GPT-6 Astra, to Google Cloud’s Model Garden. Customers will be able to buy them through Google Cloud Marketplace and apply existing cloud spending commitments to the purchases, according to a company blog post, as OpenAI pushes to sell its models to more enterprise customers.
Rivals learning to cooperate
The deal adds another layer to an increasingly complicated relationship. OpenAI and Google compete head-on in AI products and search, yet the economics of building and deploying large models keep pushing them toward cooperation. Google has been positioning its cloud unit as a neutral platform offering a broad choice of models, after striking a deal last year to supply OpenAI with additional computing capacity.
Google becomes the latest major hyperscaler to offer OpenAI models, after the company’s exclusive distribution arrangement with Microsoft expired in April. OpenAI has since expanded to Amazon Web Services and now Google Cloud. The arrangement also opens regulated industries to OpenAI’s systems through Google Cloud’s access controls and data governance tools, a route to buyers who do not want a separate direct account. Nvidia’s Hugging Face deal showed the same logic: the AI race is increasingly about who controls distribution, not just who trains the best model.
The cloud as the new storefront
For hyperscalers, selling a rival’s models through their own marketplace keeps customers inside their infrastructure while taking a cut of each sale. The model is already proven: Anthropic, OpenAI’s chief rival, drew 47 percent of its 2025 revenue from cloud providers Amazon and Google, according to its IPO filing reviewed by Reuters.
The risk for OpenAI is dependence. Each new distribution deal widens its reach but deepens its reliance on the very giants it competes with, a tension investors will watch as AI infrastructure financing comes under growing scrutiny. Reuters’ reporting frames the Google Cloud move as OpenAI’s latest enterprise push, one that trades a measure of independence for access to the deepest pool of corporate buyers in the industry.
