IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva opened the Fund’s 2026 Annual Meetings season in Singapore with the traditional curtain-raiser address, setting out the institution’s latest view of the global economic outlook and the policy priorities it wants member countries to act on.

The remarks, followed by a conversation with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, run through the Fund’s read on growth, inflation and the risks that boards and finance ministries are pricing in for the year ahead. Watch the full address in the official IMF video below.

The curtain-raiser address matters because it sets the vocabulary the week’s meetings will argue in. Managing directors come to the Annual Meetings with national problems; the Fund’s opening speech performs the useful service of ranking them, and Georgieva’s Singapore framing — growth holding up in aggregate while its foundations fragment — is the ranking finance ministers will spend the week testing against their own economies.

For executives watching from outside the hall, the speech is an early-warning system. The Fund sees the debt ledgers, the capital-flow data and the trade fractures before most boardrooms do, and its public language, once calibrated in Singapore, migrates quickly into the risk sections of corporate plans. What the IMF normalises as vocabulary this week, CFOs will be required to have opinions about next quarter.
