Days before finance ministers and central bank governors from 191 countries gather in Bangkok for the 2026 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings (October 12–18), IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva laid out the Fund’s latest assessment of the global economy in a curtain-raiser address in Singapore on October 7 — and the message was a stark one.

Georgieva warned that the world economy is being pulled in opposing directions: elevated uncertainty, record public debt and geopolitical tensions weighing on growth, while rapid advances in artificial intelligence drive investment and create new opportunities. She cautioned that high energy prices could persist even after the Gulf conflict ends, with Brent futures signaling elevated oil prices through 2027 — and warned that a disappointment in AI earnings could turn heavy borrowing by technology firms into a far-reaching financial shock.

The address, hosted by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in partnership with the IMF, also featured a fireside chat with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. The official IMF video below carries the full speech and discussion.
